Plantation shutters add to your home’s esthetic appeal, but did you know they also add value to your home? That’s right, plantation shutters as a permanent installation on your windows are sought after by many home buyers! The value added is relative to the type of material plantation shutters are comprised of. Plantation shutters, also called plantation blinds, come in a variety of materials from vinyl, wood, and composite. The most popular type of plantation shutters in the past have been comprised of wood.
Not only do they come in many varieties of material but they also come in many different styles. Some of those styles include 2 panel, 4 panel, cross rail, no cross rail, hidden tilt, inside mount, bi fold, arches, double hung and various louver sizes are available as well. Louver sizes range from 2-inch, 3-inch, 4-inch and even more. The possibilities and combinations for plantation shutters are basically endless!
And then it’s on to color. These days, you can get plantation shutters finished in most any color. You could also go with a more traditional wood finish. Depending on the type of wood your plantation shutters are made from, the finish could be lighter or darker. In the long-run, it’s all about what best suits your taste and your home’s style.

Here at Just Add Shutters of Nashville, we wanted to take a few minutes of your time to introduce you to those different styles so you can get a feel for the type of shutter that best suits your personal taste. Please take a look at this list for all the various types, styles, and elements present in them.
2-panel shutters will have a panel on each side covering of one window.
4-panel shutters will have 2 panels, top and lower, covering each side of a window for a total of 4 panels.
Shutters with a cross rail will have a support line that run across the center of a panel. This will typically allow for separate operation (open or closed) of an upper and lower section of the shutter.
No Cross Rail
Plantation shutters without a cross rail will be a solid operating shutter without individual control over upper and lower sections of the shutter.
A shutter with hidden tilt feature will not have the piece that controls the opening and closing of the louvers. They louvers are controlled by simply using your hand to open them.
Inside mounted plantation shutters are mounted inside the frame of a window as opposed to over the top of the window frame. Shutters that are mounted on the outside of the window frame are contained in a separate frame built specifically for the shutters. Examples of both types below.
Bi-fold shutters are able to be folded with a hinge. This allows for the user to swing them up and fold them on the sides of the frame.
Custom-built arched shutters are available for windows with an arched feature. Depending on the style and personal preference, they can be fixed or operational.
The size of a shutter’s louver ranges greatly from 2 inches all the way up to large, 4-inch louvers. See examples here of each size.
