Blinds are certainly a welcome addition to any home since they provide protection from the UV rays of the sun, add a bit or privacy, and add to the existing décor of your home. However, often times homeowners will dedicate time to washing and cleaning their windows (typically during spring and fall cleanings) but overlook the task of cleaning blinds.
Keep in mind your blinds need the same attention, love and care as the rest of your home as do your shades and other window treatments. Whether your window treatments are made of vinyl, wood, fabric or aluminum they all serve the same primary purposes – to block out sunlight and rays, cool down your living space and even provide needed privacy. However, though they successfully meet all these challenges, they still accumulate dirt, debris, dust and even pet hair day in and day out.
With that said, the team here at Just Add Shutters wants to offer some useful, easy tips to our valued clients for cleaning blinds that can be performed easily with a couple of simple tools and a handful of extra minutes. Here are our suggestions for cleaning your blinds quickly and thoroughly.
For starters, you will need a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment, some dishwashing liquid, warm water, and microfiber dust cloths.
Cleaning Vinyl, Aluminum and Wood Blinds – Start by lowering your blinds and closing faux-wood and other wooden blinds altogether. If you have aluminum or vinyl blinds be sure to tilt the overlapping slats downward, but do not close them completely. Next, you want to dust the blinds with a microfiber cloth. Wipe them starting at the top and working downwards. Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment on the lowest suction setting to carefully remove any dust that has accumulated on your blinds. Once you have finished cleaning the first side, flip the blinds to the opposite side and repeat the whole process again.
If dusting off the blinds still leaves you with dirt, dust and debris dampen your microfiber cloth with warm water and repeat the process and if necessary you can add some dish detergent to the cloth as needed. Be sure not to saturate wooden blinds and take time to vacuum up any excess dust that remains. Once you have completed the process, you can open up the blinds and be sure to wipe away any excess dust that may have found its way to the window sills or floors.
Cleaning Fabric Shades – For fabrics, when cleaning blinds prepare the shades by lowering them completely. Start by vacuuming the shades with a soft brush attachment and the lowest suction setting. Run the vacuum over the shades starting at the top and moving downwards. Be sure to vacuum the back of your fabric shades as well. If you notice any stains on the fabric, it is best to spot clean them with a simple mixture of dish soap and warm water. Use your microfiber cloth and dab the stains several times depending on how stubborn the stain is. Continue the process by emptying the dirty water, refilling with clean water and repeating the cleaning process with your microfiber cloth. Once you have completed the cleaning, simply allow them to air dry naturally.
